Island 19th biggest New York customer

Shipments to Bermuda during the year grew by 1.5 percent over 1990 with total long tonnage pegged at 44,666 compared to 44,020.

The 20-country survey showed only Sweden behind Bermuda. Bermuda is served out of Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, by the container ship Oleander and out of Port Salem, New Jersey, by the Bermuda Islander .

Korea, the new industrial giant of Far East, remained the biggest market for the port with 486,446 long tons of exports. In succeeding importance were Taiwan, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium & Luxembourg, Japan, Israel, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain, France, Thailand, China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Brazil and Indonesia.

Bulk exports during the year were down 12.6 percent from 1990 with bulk imports dropping 18.2 percent. Cargo imports of all descriptions were down including motor vehicles, clothing and general machinery.

Economic giants Japan and Germany continued to be the biggest sources for the port's ocean borne imports.
