Music store moves to Reid Street

Street with a picture window view of Hamilton Harbour and what the owners consider to be the best prices in town.

Settling in above The Knit and Craft shop, next to Lines Brothers, Mrs. Carole Hetherington and Mr. Brian Hetherington admit they have come a long way since they began selling music on Saturdays out of the North Shore Mini-mall.

"But we are still just a mom and pop record store,''said Mr. Hetherington, who is originally from Newcastle, England.

"We have established a clientele,'' he continued. "We were on North Shore for some time and moved to Court Street in January of 1992, and now we have moved to Reid Street, but we expect our clientele will follow.'' One reason for that optimism they say is because of their prices, which they say are generally lower than other music outlets.

"Between Carole and I, we probably know more about music than anyone else in Bermuda,'' he said. "We don't necessarily like the same music. Carole is more into jazz and R&B while I like reggae and rock. But we have so many titles, more than 3500.'' At their current location, there is a sizeable picture window that grants a view of Hamilton Harbour, or a cruise ship at berth.

"We did well on Court Street,'' continued Mr. Hetherington, who is a full time chef at Pink Beach Club,"but we didn't do the volume of business that we expected to do, considering our discs are selling for three and four dollars less than some others.'' In a bid to keep costs down, the couple avoided expensive overseas purchases of display cabinets for the music, opting to buy local instead. But what they did import was the system of display, after they saw the idea at work in the United States.

Instead of displaying the actual disc in its jewel box (dust cover), they instead display the information sleeve on a solid piece of plexiglass, removing the possibility of theft and cutting down on breakage of the plastic jewel boxes.

Mrs. Hetherington said that the couple will spend some time beautifying the shop, particularly at the front with a garden, after just moving in last week.
