Environmental experts are carrying out pollution tests on the smoke from the Meridian and the Police are considering whether to prosecute the ship's master and agent Meyer Agencies over the soot.

The pictures were taken at the Dockyard after boatowners and a restaurant complained of the smoke smothering their boats and diners almost two weeks ago.

Yesterday Police said their investigations were still continuing and the Ministry of Environment was still waiting the results of air tests taken near the Meridian.

The smoke is caused when the cruise liner restarts two boilers, which are shut down during her stay. Soot gathers and is blown out when the boilers are re-stoked.
