PWs begins it consolidation
Street location -- where it has been since 1875.
The move is part of a grand plan to develop a brand new shopping centre in Pembroke at a huge property called "The Waterfront on Pitts Bay''.
The complex already houses PWs' Home Centre, Feed and Garden Centre, Marine Centre, Marine Esso station and Miles Market in several buildings.
PW's lease on its three-storey, 6,000-square-foot Front Street store expired this year but the company was granted a one-year extension so it could complete its relocation.
First to move, probably by late summer, will be its household appliances and audio visual section, which is being relocated at the former PWs Motor Showrooms. The showrooms have been moved to a site on St. John's Road, next to PWs Motor Centre.
At this point, PWs will occupy only the first floor of the site, from where it sells household and tourist items. The firm must be completely out of the Front Street property by the end of February, 1993.
PWs' vice president of marketing Mrs. Joan Hug said it no longer made business sense for a company with a predominantly local clientele to be located on Front Street.
"Front Street is mainly for tourist-dominated businesses,'' she said. "This new shopping centre will enable us to better serve our local customers. It is shopping made easy.'' PWs is spending a lot of money in a bid to turn The Waterfront on Pitts Bay into one of the city's best shopping centres.
In addition to the new sales outlet for appliances and electronics, the Pitts Bay site will undergo several physical changes.
A new one way entrance and exit system is being introduced, sidewalks are being added throughout the shopping plaza and customer parking is being increased to accommodate over 100 cars.
PWs is the local agent for brands such as Maytag, KitchenAid, Jennair, AEG, Panasonic and Technics.
MOVING OUT -- PWs has to be out of this building by early next year.
