Routine traffic keeps docks busy

Equipment for the Corporation of Hamilton's half-million-dollar sewer line repair project at Front Street arrived on the Oleander on Sunday.

The sewer project, which began this week, is expected to be completed by the middle of February.

Container Ship Management, local agents for the Oleander , also reported the arrival of 95 dry containers, 27 refrigerated containers, two cars and some steel decking.

The Oleander left Bermuda on Tuesday with a container of books which were expected to reach South Africa in 46 days.

Meyer Agencies reported that the Somers Isles arrived on Monday from Fernandina Beach, Florida with 73 containers, including six refrigerated containers, two boats, 44 bundles of lumber and five packages of steel.

The ship was expected to return to Florida today.

Meyer also reported that the Bermuda Islander arrived on Tuesday with 54 containers, including four refrigerated, a boat, and a horse trailer. It sailed for Salem, New Jersey yesterday.

The Panamanian car ship Frisia arrived in Bermuda yesterday with 44 cars and 76 cases of parts.

Meyer said it left for Nassau, Bahamas, yesterday.

John S. Darrell reported that the German research vessel Planet , which is berthed along the Number five and six docks at Front Street, was scheduled to leave Bermuda for Key West, Florida, today.

The local shipping agent was also expecting the cement ship Espartana to arrive at the West End tomorrow morning.

The ship will be carrying 5,700 metric tons of cement.

It is scheduled to leave Bermuda at the weekend.

TAKING A BREAK -- The German weapons research ship Planet rests in Hamilton after an Atlantic crossing from Kiel, Germany. She arrived on Monday and is due to depart this morning for Key West, Florida. Launched in 1965, she is due to be replaced before the end of the century.
