Sports Ministry to host seminar

hosted by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Recreation at the end of this month at the Bermuda College Stonington Campus.

The symposium, planned for Saturday, January 28, is open to representatives of all local sporting bodies.

This year, as was suggested at the conclusion of the 1994 seminar, participants will learn more about the role of the Bermuda Olympic Association and their relationship with Island's clubs and organisations as well as the Charities Commission, and sport and the media.

Other topics to be addressed are sport and the law, and new initiatives by the Ministry of Sport, namely the Sport Recognition Policy which identifies criteria for the official recognition of an organised activity as a sport.

Also to be discussed is the National Junior Athletic sponsorship programme.

Sports Minister Pamela Gordon will speak on her Ministry's new initiatives while Royal Gazette Sports Editor Adrian Robson, Mid Ocean News Sports Editor Dexter Smith and a representative of Bermuda Broadcasting Company will talk about sport and media.

Lawyers from Appleby Spurling and Kempe, headed by John Barritt, will talk about the legal obligations for sports administrators, sports event organisers and the rights of participants.

Bermuda Olympic Association president Austin Woods and Secretary General John Hoskins will speak about the BOA and Collington Perinchief, Chairman of the Charities Commission, will address the seminar on the role of his organisation.

The Minister pointed out that there were 43 different sporting organisations represented in Bermuda and she encouraged each body to send between one and three representatives to the seminar, which gets underway at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 4.30 p.m.

Opening and summing up remarks will be made by Anthony Roberts, Director of Youth, Sport and Recreation.

Roberts said information on the conference had been sent to all national sporting organisations on the Island. Other interested persons are invited to contact the ministry for further information.

There will be a $50 registration fee which includes lunch, all sessions, conference material and a copy of a post conference report. The deadline for registration is this Friday.
