Technical seminar offered
better equip Bermudians pursuing careers in the trades.
"The seminar will help in understanding the process and methods of technical training,'' said Michael Stowe, coordinator of the five-day seminar.
"Very often students may pass the tests but are not able to extract the true value of their training. This leaves them not as proficient as they could be.'' Mr. Stowe will be bringing in Bobby Peters, head of the electronics department of J.F. Drake State Technology College in Hounslow, Alabama, to conduct the seminar.
"The seminar will teach students how to set things in perspective and will be comprehensive,'' he said. "They will be given techniques of self-study which is important because it is really required in order for them to take initiate in their training.'' Carneal Smith, service manager of Holmes, Williams & Purvey, will also be a presenter at the seminar and will discuss the importance of customer service relations.
"It is vitally important for people in the trades to have a feel for good customer relations,'' Mr. Stowe explained. "In many cases they are on the front line and have to deal with customers one on one.
"Tradesmen need to recognise that although they may be proficient at working with technical devices, if their customer relations skills are poor it limits their chances of upward mobility.'' Techniques on how to keep abreast of changes in technology will also be imparted during the 20 hours of instruction in the five day seminar.
The seminar will run from November 15 to 19 at a cost of $375.
