Tenant criticises lack of toilets
Company had failed to provide toilets for businesses at the site.
The man, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "I rent property on Marginal Wharf and there are no bathroom facilities. There are other tenants in the same position and we've talked to the company in charge but nothing has happened.
"If we or our clients want to use the bathroom then it involves a trip to the Airport,'' he said. "It makes it hard to do business as I'm sure you can appreciate.'' But BLDC spokesman Don Grearson said: "There are bathroom facilities located in a warehouse on the premises which all the operators share.
"The situation is not dissimilar to office buildings across the Island where tenants from different companies share the same facilities.'' Mr. Grearson pointed out that the former Naval Air Station buildings had been exempted from Bermuda's Building Code for more than 50 years.
This had created a unique situation which the BLDC was trying to rectify through work with the Planning Department to bring the buildings up to standard.
"Meanwhile we are doing our best to make sure these lands are used to create opportunities for Bermudians, particularly small businesses.'' Twenty five companies have seized the chance to operate under competitive rates at the former NAS site, showed the BLDC was fulfilling an important part of its mandate, Mr. Grearson said.
And he noted that tenants inspected the sites they were going to rent before they signed a contract so "when they sign, presumably they are reasonably satisfied''.
