Bermuda could see a hiring boom if Government’s proposed telecoms regulatory reform happens.LinkBermuda Group CEO Ann Petley-Jones said that depending on how many new services it is allowed to offer under the reform, the company could add dozens of Bermudians to its payroll.Cable and Wireless (Bermuda) Holdings was yesterday rebranded with its new name LinkBermuda Holdings Ltd.Ms Petley-Jones said LinkBermuda has brought back a number of management functions to Bermuda from the UK, and has already hired eight full-time Bermudian employees as it gears up for the promised overhaul, which is expected to allow Bermuda’s telecoms providers to offer one-stop-shopping for services such as phone, digital cable TV, wireless and Internet.LinkBermuda is expected to be one of the largest players in the new regime- along with KeyTech, TBI, Digicel (which recently acquired Transact), and CellOne.The 121-year-old company’s signage has been changed at both its locations in Hamilton, and at the Devonshire teleport, replacing the globally known C&W logo with the new LinkBermuda red, navy and pale blue branding. The red and navy comes from the Bermuda flag and the pale blue represents the sea and sky, while the new name ties back to the Bragg Group, which operates as EastLink in Canada. In addition, EastLink International Holdings, the Canadian company that bought out C&W’s operations on the Island, announced C&W eBusiness would be renamed SpheraLink and Quantum Communications would retain its current name and services.“We are very excited to be entering this next phase in LinkBermuda’s development,” Ms Petley-Jones said. “We view these companies as a long-term investment and are committed to play a key role in Bermuda’s economy as a major supplier of communications services. LinkBermuda has a long tradition of investing in its infrastructure and operations, and we are now building on that foundation. We have invested in people, networks and data centres.“We have kept, and are growing, our local Bermuda workforce. We have repatriated dozens of corporate functions to Bermuda from the UK. We have hired Bermudians in executive management, operations, sales and customer care positions.“We are expanding into cloud computing and international data centre services. We are planning for an expansion into other information services products.“We remain fully supportive of regulatory reform which we anticipate will enable a level playing field in the telecom sector and lead to further investments in the sector. We are poised for further investment in Bermuda.”Ms Petley-Jones said LinkBermuda plans on launching new services within its existing licence in the next few weeks. And if reform occurs, she said LinkBermuda would like to offer “a lot of new services”.The former Cable and Wireless was acquired in a $70 million deal by the Bragg Group, owner of Bragg Communications- the largest privately held communications and video services company in Canada, operating in 9 of 10 Canadian provinces under the EastLink brand. The Company was the first Canadian cable company to offer a “triple play” (telecom, Internet and video services) to customers.A spokesperson for Government said last month it is moving forward with the proposed telecoms overhaul, and that the much anticipated legislation could finally be introduced in the coming session of Parliament.
