British American policyholders to get 35% of claims in first cheque

Sale negotiations: The British American Building on Front Street

British American life insurance policyholders will receive a payout on 35 percent of their claims from the now defunct company next week, it was announced yesterday.Stephen Lowe, the Official Receiver, said in a statement that due to negotiations with the buyer for the building not having yet been concluded he had resolved that an interim dividend should be paid to creditors. The second and final distribution of the balance will be paid on completion of the sale of the building and when the proceeds of the sale have been received. The first round of cheques will be available for collection from the British American offices at 133 Front Street, Hamilton on Monday December 19 between 9am and 4pm from Monday to Friday.Creditors should bring valid photo identification (a driver’s licence or passport) and will be required to sign a form acknowledging receipt of the cheque.Any cheque not collected will be sent by mail to the last know address of the creditor.“The Official Receiver is grateful for the continued patience exhibited by creditors during this process and is pleased to be able to make this payment to creditors and take a significant step towards bringing this difficult matter to a close,” said Mr Lowe. For more information contact the British American hotline on 294-2651, e-mail infoba[AT]kpmg.bm or visit the website at www.kpmg.bm/ba
