BTC names Place winner of Sir John Cox Award

Well done! Lloyd Fray, deputy chairman of BTC, presents the 2012 BTC Sir John Cox Award to Charlene Place

BTC has announced that Charlene Place as the recipient of the 2012 Sir John W Cox Award.Ms Place, who recently graduated from the Berkeley Institute, was selected from a pool of over 60 applicants. She will be attending the University of South Florida to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting.BTC has supported the educational endeavours of Bermudian youth through the Sir John W Cox Award for the past 30 years.Philip Harris, chief administrative officer stated: “It’s a pleasure for BTC to offer this award every year as one of many ways BTC fulfills its corporate responsibility, by assisting Bermudians with the tertiary education necessary for them to compete for and secure jobs, be productive members of our society, and ultimately achieve their goals in life.”The award is tenable for a period of up to four years and grants the recipient $20,000 a year for tuition, books and other educational expenses.Reflecting on how she felt upon learning that she was this year’s recipient of the award, Ms Place stated: “I became overly excited. Receiving the award will help me tremendously in being able to accomplish my goals.”While at the Berkeley Institute Ms Place excelled academically and undertook roles such as prefect, president of the Certified Accounting Technician Programme, president of the Forensic Science Club and co-captain of the volleyball team. Ms Place has also been actively involved in the Bermudian community through volunteer activities with Age Concern and the SPCA.BTC has also granted a bursary award of $10,000 a year for two years to David Thomas. Mr Thomas will be entering his first year at Ohio State University to study Engineering. He is a graduate of Mount Saint Agnes Academy.
