Court Street staple Fish Hut closes its doors
The beloved Court Street restaurant Fish Hut has reportedly closed it doors.Rolling shutters graced the entry to the popular store on Thursday, with no sign to explain the reason for its closure.A spokesman for the Economic Empowerment Zone said they were aware the business had closed although it had been scheduled to remain open until the end of this month. The Court Street building it was housed in had been up for sale for some time, the spokesman added. The Royal Gazette reported two years ago that the Fish Hut’s owners hoped to move to a new location. An application to transform a building at 6 Elliot Street into a restaurant, was submitted to the Department of Planning in November 2011.A spokesman for the Fish Hut then confirmed they were “looking for a better location”.It is unknown what became of those plans and the restaurant’s owners have been unavailable for comment on its closure for several weeks. The restaurant was started by the late Hubert and Molly Brown more than 25 years ago.It drew crowds locally and was often featured in articles by visiting travel writers including Emmy award-winner Peter Greenberg. The American journalist praised the restaurant’s battered fish sandwiches in a Department of Tourism video series highlighting the Island’s ‘hidden gems’.Meanwhile, the EEZ said they were available for the owners should the Fish Hut want to consider relocating in Northeast Hamilton.
