Bermudian fund manager featured as one of UK’s rising stars

James Thomson: A 'City superhero'. says the Daily Mail

A Bermudian fund manager in London has been tipped as a rising star by one of the UK’s biggest newspapers.

James Thomson was one of a handful of fund managers singled out by the Daily Mail as a “City superhero” set to “turbo charge” clients’ investments.

Mr Thomson, 38, who has worked for City finance firm Rathbone running its Global Opportunities fund for 13 years, said: “I’m really flattered — it’s nice to get some publicity.

“There are 2,000 funds to choose from just in the UK, so it’s important to get good publicity.”

The Rathbone fund has grown in value from $7 million in 2003 to $750 million today and it has returned 266 per cent since Mr Thomson took the helm and nine per cent over the past year alone — one of the top performing funds in the UK.

The Daily Mail article featured Mr Thomson and six other finance industry figures in Superman costumes.

And the article predicted that the star of Mr Thomson, originally from Riddell’s Bay, would continue to rise.

Darius McDermott, managing director of fund broker Chelsea Financial Services, said: “A major strength is that he is not afraid to admit his weaknesses or past errors, which is a refreshingly honest approach and allows him to concentrate on his core strengths.

“He is a high impact stock-picker and is able to assess and take calculated risks to uncover hidden, potentially lucrative investment gems.”

Mr Thomson went to Saltus Grammar before attending Middlesex School in Boston, followed by a degree in French from Cornell University in New York State.

He returned briefly to Bermuda and worked on the receivership of the former Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel with brother Steve, a businessman and a director of Bermuda Press (Holdings), the parent firm of The Royal Gazette, before deciding to try his luck in London.

Mr Thomson said: “My brother has always been someone I looked up to and admired — he has tremendous energy and entrepreneurial spirit.”

Mr Thomson married Alexandra Jackson, an Englishwoman who is a fund manager for the same firm, in 2012 and the couple have a young daughter, Hattie, aged 2.

Mr Thomson, a regular visitor back to the Island, said: “It’s always been my long-term plan to return to Bermuda, but I’d really want the blessings of my clients, who are largely based in London.

“Bermuda still feels like home, even having been away from work for so many years.”

But he has taken a bit of Bermuda to London with him — when he married in 2012, male guests wore Bermuda shorts and the wedding featured a steel drum band and a wedding cake decorated with Bermuda cedar.

And he regularly commutes from his home in the London suburb of Fulham on a scooter — with his wife as pillion passenger.

Mr Thomson said: “The drivers in London aren’t quite as aware of bikes as they are in Bermuda, but it’s by far the best way to get around the city.”
