Deltas extend good cheer to Lefroy House
The Bermuda alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc recently showed a group of seniors what Christmas is all about.Residents of Lefroy House were showered with special Christmas treats by the sorority's members.Dressed in Santa hats, the sorority gave more than 20 Lefroy House residents festive gift baskets. The group adopted Lefroy House in 2008. The goal is to participate in the residents' monthly activities such as Bingo and karaoke, while also catering to their needs.“We are extremely grateful for the Deltas and what they've done for our residents,” said Karen Fox-Simmons, recreational therapist for Lefroy House.“Since they adopted us, a group of representatives always shows up at our functions or family activities. The gift baskets were phenomenal and I know the residents are very appreciative they're giving back to those who made our community what it is today. Nothing is ever done out of selfish needs, it's always selfless and words cannot express our gratitude.”Chapter president Denise Riviere said it was heartwarming to give to the residents at Christmas time.“The residents' faces lit up when we presented the gift baskets and explained what was in them,” said Ms Riviere.“Initially, when we decided to adopt them, one of our fellow sorority members was a resident there, but she moved. However, because we built such a rapport with all the residents we continued our commitment and you can tell they enjoy when we come around.”The Deltas have also teamed up with the Salvation Army to feed the homeless once a month through their Soup on Wheels programme.
