Sorority to hold health fair today

Sigma Xi Omega, the Bermuda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, will host their first annual ‘Always Keep Active’, family health fair today.The health fair will be held at the Anglican Cathedral Hall in Hamilton from 10am to 2pm and will include health screenings, life coaching assistance, information from the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on pet health, financial information from HSBC and one-on-one interaction with a variety of community health professionals.Dr Jewell Landy, one of the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, will be in attendance giving information about dental health and Mr Fitness himself, Monroe Darrell, will be presenting a fitness demonstration. Additionally, there will be fitness stations for the kids, a fun castle and puppet shows presented by the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship to encourage youth to be spiritually healthy.“As a new year begins, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha thought it prudent to offer the community the opportunity to get information on physical, mental, spiritual, economic and pet health,” said Emilygail Dill, a member of the sorority.Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated was established in 1908 on the campus of Howard University. It is the oldest Greek-lettered organisation founded by African-American women and is dedicated to the service of others. Its founders joined together in an effort to uplift the prospects of women as well as the community in which it served. Over 100 years later and over 200,000 members strong, Alpha Kappa Alpha remains a beacon of light not only for black women but also to the greater community in the countries in which it serves.Alpha Kappa Alpha has served the Bermuda community since 1990.The local president is D’Shawn Doars and the chairwomen of the family healthfair are Debbie Jones-Hunter and Patricka Ferguson.For further information call 705-1908.
