Christian's facing more drama at the beauty salon
Almost everyone has issues these days, and no one knows that better than playwright-director Patricia Pogson, whose third presentation in her 13-part series, ‘Shis Got Isshoes, Book Three: ‘More Drama', will be staged at City Hall on October 24 and 25.
The first and second pieces, ‘Shis Got Isshoes' and ‘Shis Got Isshoes, Book Two: What's Her Story?', were very well received, and the author is confident that the latest production will follow suit, not least because it also plays to human curiosity.
“The premise of the whole series is that of a soap opera which takes place in a beauty salon called ‘Something Special',” Miss Pogson says. “The public enjoyed the last pieces, which were done in April, but they were left hanging at the end, so we decided that this month we would give them the sequel so they would stay interested in what is going on at the beauty salon.”
Like all soap operas, ‘What's Her Story?' has more twists and turns than Harbour Road to keep the audience intrigued.
“The previous production ended with the lead character, Christian (played by Danita Thomas), being told that, unknown to her, her lover is not only married, but his wife, Deidre, is the proprietor of ‘Something Special', the salon where Christian gets her hair done, and the audience was left wondering what was going to happen to Christian,” Miss Pogson says.
“Then, there's Leslie, Deidre's business partner, who has not announced that she is homosexual, so the audience doesn't know whether she is a man or a woman, and they want to know.”
Other characters in the latest piece include Delight, the salon receptionist, who knows everybody's business while keeping her own secrets, some of which are about to be revealed; Normie (played by Nadanja Bailey) who is gay but decides he needs to have children; Jeanie (played by Silita Smith), who gets into a fight with Shawnie (played by Shawnette Griffin) over their two-timing boyfriend; Sony (played by Terry Pringle) the ‘saved and sanctified' Christian, and her fun-loving sister Sadie (played by Denniqua Burrows).
For both Silita Smith and Terry Pringle, this will be their second casting in the ‘Isshoes' series.
While Ms Pringle has had previous theatrical experience, for Ms Smith ‘What's Her Story?' was her first time on stage.
“I had never done any acting before Miss Pogson discovered me. I am enjoying it tremendously,” Miss Smith, a middle school paraprofessional in real life, says.
“I can relate to a lot of things that happen, not only to my character, but to other characters. It is a very powerful role, there's nothing funny about it at all. The cast make me feel really good, and all of them are very encouraging.”
Ms Pringle, a police officer by profession, is happy to be playing a new role in this production.
“I like the role. It's different because I am playing the part of a sanctified individual, and those parts are powerful,” she says.
The latest production is again being staged by THE Company theatrical group, and the cast is 17-strong.
“The series is about issues that people have talked to us about. I have taken licence to weave them together, change the names, and adapt the situation to make one complete play,” Miss Pogson says.
