On the Arts Scene

For the first time in its history the Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be offering a scholarship in theatre arts, beginning next Autumn. Candidates will be chosen from young people with strong Bermuda connections, with the winner being announced by the Society's scholarship committee next Spring. Applicants will be required to prove they are or will be enrolled in a bona fide, accredited theatre arts course. The course need not be confined to performance alone, but can also be for other aspects of theatre, including technical and management. Initially, the scholarship will be for one year, but may be renewable provided the student meets the required grades and re-applies. Watch for advertisements in all the print media in early December for further information.

The final lecture in the David McLaughlin Lecture Series takes place at the Bermuda National Gallery tomorrow evening when Jennifer McGregor, visual arts curator at Wave Hill, New York, addresses the topic: ‘Pushing the Envelope: Public Art'. Her focus will be on innovative projects that move art into the public realm by seizing opportunities to change the way people experience the environment surrounding them. Refreshments will be served at 5.30 p.m., and the lecture will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets ($5 for BNG members, $10 for others) are available at the National Gallery. For further information ( 295-9428.

During her Bermuda visit, Ms McGregor will also be speaking with artists, architects, city planners and corporate partners regarding the practical application of commissioning public art.
