Director and organist named Outstanding Young Persons

Well-known theatrical director and producer Ms Patricia Pogson and church organist Mr. Darryl Simons were voted Bermuda's Outstanding Young Persons of the Year on Saturday night.

Organised by the Bermuda Junior Chamber, the two Bermudians were nominated by the public and were judged by an independent panel of judges chaired by Shadow Minister of Education Ms Jennifer Smith.

They will now have their names forwarded to Glasgow, Scotland where they will be included in the nominations from around the world in the Junior Chamber International World Congress for the 10 outstanding young persons of the world for 1995.

Ms Pogson, who has shared her artistic talents with the community through Black Box productions and Jabulani Repertory, won her award in the cultural achievement category.

And Mr. Simons, whose gift of music is well known among gospel music lovers won his award in the category of personal development.

When asked why they thought they won, Ms Pogson said: "I have helped to provide an outlet for anyone seeking to become a professional actor and I have provided them with a place to work.

"It is important to me that all theatrical organisations on the Island come together at one point under one umbrella where the barriers in racism, age and sex are non-existent.'' Ms Pogson added: "I get to work with a wide range of people including adults who want to develop in any area of theatre.'' Mr.

Simons, who has spent 22 years in the music business both locally and internationally, was one of the first artists to provide background vocals for visiting gospel singers. He also was the producer of Bermudian singer Angelo Mitchell's demo tape.

"Music has been my life long ambition, and I have been able to play with people who I grew up listening to on the radio in both gospel and rhythm and blues,'' he said "I have served the community playing in various churches and for several if not all charities.'' Mr. Simons also said that he has most recently headed up a new post office choir and is currently working with the Vernon Temple Youth Choir, the Vernon Temple Celestial Choir, the St. John's Gospel choir and Rejoice.

Nominees of the Bermuda Junior Chamber awards must be between 18 and 40-years-old and they must have achieved outstanding success or contributed to the categories of personal improvement, financial success, cultural achievement, voluntary service, science or technology, moral or religious leadership, sports, personnel or business achievement and community work, including the environment.
