Retrospective makes New York shortlist
The Masterworks Foundation's travelling show, "Bermuda: Two Hundred Years of Inspiration'', was short-listed in the New York Times Arts and Leisure section alongside an Andy Warhol collection as one of the best exhibitions on display in the city.
And since it began its tour in Philadelphia last February, the show has drawn reviews and mention in such diverse publications as The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Wall Street Journal and The Art Newspaper of New York.
Masterworks Director Tom Butterfield said: "It reassures me that Masterworks and Bermuda are keeping company with such impressive members of the art world.'' "The travelling show is about getting Bermudian history and culture seen and identified beyond our reef line. We have in the last 13 years put together a collection that does rival better known communities. Now the job is to put us on the map globally.'' The show features 50 paintings from The Masterworks Foundation collection, and includes such artists as Georgia O'Keefe, Winslow Homer, and Charles Demuth.
All the artists came to the Island for inspiration at different times over the past two centuries.
The show will next be heading to Toronto and possibly on to London, England.
Sunken Treasure: One of the paintings travelling with the Masterworks Collection is Marsden Hartley's `Sunken Treasure', an oil on wood work from 1935, when Hartley sojourned on the Island. The Bermuda retrospective recently gained note in the New York Times as one of the best shows in town.
