Weighty New Year's resolutions are more than an act of faith
Many of you have made that time-worn resolution to lose weight and be healthy in 1998, but to do so it is important that you make some changes to your lifestyle such as eating the right foods and exercising, exercising, exercising.
Nutrition Services offers these seven tips as a guide to good eating: Eat foods from all five food groups daily. Each food group provides you with different important nutrients, that are essential to good health.
Eat a variety of foods. Some foods in a food group are better sources of a nutrient than others. By eating several different foods from each group, you increase your chance of getting all the nutrients you need.
Make sure you are eating the right serving size of different foods by looking at a food guide pyramid.
Choose lower-fat foods more often. Eating more breads, cereals, grains, fruits, vegetables, peas, beans, and lentils will help you cut down your fat intake. Choosing lower-fat dairy products and leaner meats such as chicken or fish and using lower fat cooking methods such as grilling, broiling, steaming, baking or microwaving without added fat will also help reduce your fat intake.
Other foods. Taste and enjoyment can also come from "other foods'' that are not in the five food groups. Some of these foods are high in fat or calories and low in nutrients, so eat these "other foods'' in moderation. Limit these "other foods'' if you want to loose weight.
Plan your meals to ensure that you get the balance and variety of foods you need each day.
It is also important that you do some form of exercise for no less than half an hour a day.
