East end set for soca spectacular

Byron Lee and his all-star band are set to "let the dogs out'' at this year's "Soca Frenzy'' concert.

And this year's show promises a fireworks display, 20 new tunes and six new dances, including "Jump Up'' and "Double Barrel''.

This Saturday's show, sponsored by DeMello Entertainment Productions, marks Byron Lee and the Dragonaires' seventh Bermuda performance. The Tiger Bay show pulls some of the biggest concert crowds seen all year -- usually at least 5,000 people.

"It took us 25 years to get here, and now you can't get rid of us!'' joked Mr. Lee.

He said the group will be touring in 36 cities this year. They recently finished touring throughout Canada -- performing in Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver -- and were expected to go to New York for Labour Day.

"Our sound is our strong point,'' said Mr. Lee, noting that the musical arrangement heard at Saturday night's performance will be identical to the music on their CD.

Dragonaires newcomer, Cedric Poitier, is the singer of the new single "Jump Up'' which he said is "big in Jamaica, big in the Bahamas, and soon to be big in Bermuda''.

Mr. Lee encouraged everyone to come out early to get their money's worth, noting the 1 a.m. cutoff time.

Gates open at 7 and show time is at 7.30. Local group Jahstice will also be performing.

Tickets are available in blocks of ten for $40 each or individually for $45 and can be purchased at Music Box, Music World, Sound Stage, Queen St.

Liquors, Hillview Variety and Music Box East.
