Evans' work featured in Carib Art Show

Only one artist from Bermuda has been included in the re-juried Carib Art Show which was due to open at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris last month.

Vaughan Evans, senior art teacher at Saltus Grammar School and a former president of the Bermuda Society of Arts, has been notified that his pastel study of the Cave Pool at Walsingham was one of 52 works finally selected for inclusion. The Carib Art Show, featuring contemporary art of the Caribbean region, travelled to Bermuda last year, during which an estimated total of 18,000 people saw the exhibition. Thirty-two countries were represented by a maximum of five artists from each area. A special jury chose work submitted by Mr. Evans, Jill Amos Raine, Michael Swan, Otto Trott and Sharon Wilson for the show.

A list of the final selection reveals that only three countries -- Cuba, Martinique and Barbados -- succeeded in having all of their artists' work included in the Paris Show.

According to the March issue of the Carib Art Newsletter, the travelling aspect of this giant show has proved to be something of a disappointment: high costs, lack of space, inadequate infrastructure and manpower are blamed for the fact that, apart from Bermuda, only the host country (Curacao), Aruba and the Cayman Islands were able, in the end, to stage an exhibition of this magnitude.

Mr. Evans, who was informed that his picture would be displayed at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, says, "I am very grateful to Ruth Thomas for all the support she has given me and to give me this great opportunity. I consider it quite an honour to have been chosen.'' In the meantime, Ms Thomas, Officer for Cultural Affairs, has announced that Bermuda has been invited to participate in another major show, the Third Biennial of the Caribbean and Central America, due to open at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo, this October.

"This is a wonderful overseas opportunity for our local artists to show their work,'' says Ms Thomas.

Details for submission are available from Ms Thomas (292 9447) who is co-ordinating Bermuda's entries. If more than 12 artists apply for inclusion, she will arrange for a selection to be made. Anyone interested is urged to contact her as soon as possible because the work has to arrive in Santo Domingo before August 26. The Department of Cultural Affairs has agreed to be responsible for shipment of works.

PARIS BOUND -- Vaughan Evans' pastel of Cavepool Walsingham from last year's Carib Art Show, has also been selected for exhibition in Paris.
