Firefighters shine in day camp demo
career for a group of five and six year olds recently.
Nearly two dozen wide-eyed youngsters from Camp Pontoon Summer Day Camp were mesmerised at the sights and sounds of the various equipment and fire vehicles that were on hand.
The saying that it only takes a little effort to please a child was never so true as their faces lit up when they were allowed to put on pieces of a fire uniform and watch as fire officers sprayed a gushing fire hose.
As part of the camp's plan to expose the youngsters to a variety of extra curricular activities that centred around Bermuda's history of transportation, the children were treated to the workings of a fire truck.
Senior counsellor at the camp, Vanessa Tavares, said it was a good opportunity for the children to learn and have fun at the same time.
"Our camp's theme is transportation,'' she said. "We wanted to give them a sense of how transportation was in the past and what it will be like in the future.
"So they will see this fire truck as an example and when we go back, we will ask them to use their imagination and draw pictures or work with arts and crafts to see what it might look like in the future.'' Ms Tavares said the children had very vivid imaginations and the outing would only enhance their creative thinking.
Firefighter Jay Donawa told the children about his job.
"Most kids say they want to become firemen when they are young,'' he said, "and it's always nice to have the kids come down.
"I really enjoy being around them and teaching them about fire safety. As they get older, we try to be more specific with them, but at this age, five and six, they are just excited to see the trucks.''
