Musician's benefit sounds off November 15
The first Bermuda Entertainers and Musicians charity festival will take place next month at the Number One Shed on Front Street.
The concert was originally scheduled to be held at Clearwater Beach in St.
David's last month, but was postponed after it was learned the event -- organised by the Bermuda Musicians and Entertainers Benevolent Fund -- was by law only allowed to run until 8 p.m.
At the time promoters for the event -- To benefit musicians David Burch, Glenfield Smith, and Rosemarie DeShields for medical expenses -- were still advertising the show would run until 1 a.m., even though they did not have a permit.
The show is being organised by Abdullah Furquan with assistance from promoter Gladwin Simmons and Dread and Baha Productions' Andrew Phillips, who is handling the coordination and marketing.
Parks Director William Cook recently told The Royal Gazette he met with Mr.
Furquan on September 22: "At this meeting he admitted he did not have a Parks Department Special Use Permit, but he did have an occasional liquor license for September 28 from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.'' The permit allows for the playing of amplified music.
He added Mr. Furquan had told Police he had the permit, but was never asked to produce it before receiving the licence.
The licence was promptly changed through Magistrates' Court to allow for the sale of liquor between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. in conjunction with the permit.
Organisers yesterday confirmed they had moved the event to Hamilton and had rescheduled to November 15.
A "mega cultural arts & entertainment'' centre will be held at the upper level of Number One Shed from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
And downstairs, from 6.30 p.m. to 2 a.m., the show will see a wide range of Bermuda's musicians and entertainers performing to raise money for their musical comrades.
The Bermuda Musicians and Entertainers Benevolent Fund is a charity that will initially help entertainers who need financial support for medical expenses, but will ultimately serve as an insurance base supporting all of Bermuda's entertainers.
The theme of the show is "Giving from the Heart,'' and organisers have urged the whole community to attend.
