New president for Junior Service League
Mrs. Pam Shaw, a mother of two young children and five-year veteran of the League, was confirmed as president of the local service organisation at its annual general meeting this month.
The American-born Mrs. Shaw, who has served as vice-president of the League for the past year, replaces Mrs. Nancy Steynor.
Over the past 12 months, League fundraising efforts have come up with some $50,000 in donations for local charities, including an $18,000 dialysis machine and $5,000 CT Scan for the Bermuda Hospitals Board, $5,000 for the Coalition for the Protection of Children, $4,000 for the Child's Wish Foundation and $2,000 or more for the Outward Bound programme, the Child and Adolescent Service, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and United World Colleges.
The League, which currently has some 200 members, also provided a $500 scholarship to the Bermuda College and one of $2,600 to the Bermuda Biological Station.
In other League news, the JSL presented its Deliverance Award this month for the last time.
Mrs. Cheri Hunter won the award for her dedication to the preservation of the Deliverance replica in St. George's harbour.
For nearly 25 years, the League has owned and operated the replica as a fundraiser and tourist attraction.
It was recently sold to an anonymous buyer.
At the same time, Mrs. Lynn Charlton and Mrs. Kelly Marshall were awarded the President's Achievement Award for their extraordinary contribution to the League.
Mrs. Geraldine Jones won the Executive's Award for her outstanding contribution to all of the League's projects.
Accused in recent months of shutting out their competitors at hotel concierge desks across the Island, the Morris brothers of Bermuda Island Cruises were the subjects of some positive news recently.
Mrs. Dorothy Yates of "Young at Heart,'' the Island's second-oldest senior citizens' group, reported that the company is co-sponsoring a 10th anniversary cruise for the members with the Hamilton Rotary Club.

In a separate excursion, the group is also planning a two-week trip to Canada in the upcoming months.
