Ianthia reaches her century!

Centenarian Mrs. Ianthia D. Douglas is flanked by her daughter, Hamilton beautician Elaine Wade and nephew, former Bermuda heavyweight champion Leroy Palmer. Standing behind Elaine are her daughter Ianthia and husband Eddie Fox, their son Ethan; and Junior Palmer, Cecelia Downs, Maryann Hurst and Betty Hudson. Among friends of Mrs. Douglas at the party was Mrs. Christabell Cann, who marked her 100th birthday last month.

Another of Bermuda's citizens has reached the ripe old age of 100. She's Mrs. Ianthia Elaine Douglas, who was given a celebration by a host f family and friends in the activity centre at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital's Extended Care Unit on Monday.

Mrs. Douglas was well known for the children's nursery she operated in later life on Frisewell's Hill. She was also an upholsterer and a cook.

Best of all, she prided herself in being "a worshipper and a warrior" who always loved the Lord. She was a staunch member and volunteer at Christ Church, Devonshire.

She actually came to Bermuda on holiday 80 years ago from her native land, Barbados. Ianthia fell in love, became the wife of Arnold Douglas and mother of his two daughters, Elaine and Esther. Her husband was of the Douglas clan of Devonshire farmers, who for generations were among the country's biggest exporters of onions, potatoes and celery.

His brother was the late Hailey Douglas, an outstanding building contractor.
