Soul music will be the focus at the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) tonight.

Singer Gita Blakeney-Saltus and musical director Robert Edwards will perform as the gallery marks the end of the 2010 Bacardi Biennial Exhibition.

'Soul Night' is a chance for the pair to revisit the music they enjoyed working together here and abroad, Mrs Blakeney-Saltus said.

"It brings me back to one of my special places, the [BNG], where I enjoyed both a professional career as development director and showcased my passion as a songstress with my 'Champagne and Jazz' evenings," she said.

"I was thrilled that BNG director Lisa Howie invited me to provide a performance that is funky and soulful and one that would reflect the modern and contemporary art of the 2010 Biennial Exhibition, which is set to close on November 26."

She added: "The music will definitely be some of my 'old school' favourites with a bit of Erika Badu, Lauren Hill, Sade, Gladys Knight and many others.

"We are really looking forward to a soulful evening of music and art bringing wonderful people together in the ever eclectic space of the BNG."

Soul Nite is a fundraiser to assist the gallery with operational costs, said Mrs Howie.

"But on an artistic level, the event reconnects the singing talents of Gita Blakeney-Saltus with the gallery, and will be set amongst the creative ingenuity of the contemporary visual artists featured in the 2010 Biennial Exhibition."

Guests will receive a glass of bubbly and a raffle ticket at the door. Prizes include a dinner for two and accommodation at Cambridge Beaches.

"I encourage the community to support the BNG, while grooving to Gita and Robert's soul tunes, and enjoying the surrounding art exhibition. Please join us for a few fun happy hours," Ms Howie said.

Tickets are $20 members; $25 non-members. RSVP to director@bng.bm, buy tickets from the BNG front desk in City Hall or telephone 295-9428.
