Devonshire Parish Council hands out three financial awards

Three hardworking young people are now a little closer to achieving their dreams thanks to an inaugural financial awards from Devonshire Parish Council.The three students, Shawnae Brangman, Masen O’Brien and Kejon Sampson were chosen out of a dozen applications sent to the Council.All applicants are pursuing an array of disciplines and are participating in an variety of activities in our local community and abroad.“We (the Committee) were very impressed with the calibre of all the applicants and believe that this generation will be instrumental in the future of Bermuda’s success”, said Kimberley D Caines, scholarship committee chair.Warwick Academy graduate and former head girl Ms Brangman received a scholarship. She will be enrolling at Arizona State University (ASU) in Phoenix, Arizona in September to pursue a degree in social work.“She impressed the committee with her outstanding academics as well as her extra-curricular activities,” said Ms Caines. “She has danced with the Jackson School of Performing Arts in various styles of dance since she was three-years-old, participated as a YouthNet mentor and has represented Bermuda internationally through track and field.“Miss Brangman has been a member of the Mid-Island Striders Track Club for five years and as such will continue her track and field involvement as a member of the ASU Track team.”The first bursary recipient was Mr O’Brien, a graduate of the Bermuda Institute and former deputy head boy.He will be attending Oakwood University in Oakwood, Alabama and will be pursuing a degree in Biochemistry with the hopes of becoming a forensic scientist.He has been a member of both the National Junior Honour Society and the National Honour Society throughout his high school career.Mr O’Brien is actively involved with his church and is a member of the Crossroads Men’s Football team.He has a passion for community service, which is evidenced by his involvements both locally and abroad.The second bursary recipient was Mr Sampson, who a graduate of the Berkeley Institute. He is currently pursuing a degree in Architectural Building and Engineering Technology at the New England Institute of Technology in Rhode Island.Mr Sampson is actively involved in the local community as a volunteer at the Centre, on Angle Street, and is also a decorated drummer and is a drum leader with the Centre’s Drum Camp.Mr Sampson played with Dandy Town Sports Club from the age of nine to 18 and has been a member of the Junior League Bowling Team and the National Team.“The scholarship committee and council members thank all individuals who submitted applications and wishes continued success to the applicants and winners in their endeavours both academically and in their extra-curricular pursuits,” said Ms Caines.For more information about the scholarship, e-mail the committee at dpcscholarship[AT]gmail.com.
