Speaker to address Island’s issues

Alfred (Coach) Powell: Motivator, author and community educator will offer solutions to the many challenges facing our youth during presentations today and Wednesday.

Anti-social behaviour among the Island’s youth will be discussed today and Wednesday when Ohio-based motivator, author and community educator, Alfred (Coach) Powell, holds two presentations on behalf of the Mirrors Programme.Professor Powell, an internationally recognised award-winning keynote speaker, lecturer and workshop facilitator, will offer solutions to protecting the youth from the ‘the intoxication of the Hip Hop Generation’, trends in street culture, gang violence, substance abuse, irresponsible sex and the marketing of violence. Mirrors is calling the two-night presentation a “must hear for parents, educators, godparents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins” as Mr Powell offers tools to aid in protecting our children and minimising the risk of their engagement in problem behaviours.Today’s presentation will take place at Sandys Secondary Middle School assembly hall and will be followed up by a second presentation on Wednesday at Whitney Institute Middle School assembly hall. The doors open at 5.30pm for a 6.30pm start and admission is free.Prof Powell is the founder and CEO of Human Motivation Council and Human Motivation Circle. He is a strong advocate for youth, families, educators and service providers in underserved communities. His groundbreaking research into street culture, the marketing of violence, chemical addiction to urban youth and his more than 25 years work in the trenches as a champion high school track and football coach and certified violence prevention specialist have earned him the title “Dean of Street Psychology”.An Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the School of Social Welfare Health Sciences, State University of New York, Prof Powell currently serves as the youth director and coordinator for two distinguished annual conferences, ‘The Black Alcoholism and Addiction Institute’ and ‘Counseling and Treating People of Colour’. A specialist in cultural diversity with expertise in African American and Afro-Latino youth issues, he consults with numerous school districts, social service agencies and churches around the country.He is the author of the highly praised ‘Coaching in the classroom: Helping Underserved Students Win the Game of Academic Excellence’. His best-selling books ‘Message N/A Bottle: The 40oz Scandal’ and ‘Hip Hop Hypocrisy: When Lies Sound Like the Truth’ are widely used by clergy, educators, couselors and parents in their work with youth.In 2005 Prof Powell was selected as one of the Top 10 African American Men of Dayton, Ohio by Parity, Inc of Ohio.
