Fashion designer Amethyst often tones down his runway shows to suit the Bermuda market but the artist isn’t holding anything back next weekend. He describes his new beach-loungewear collection ‘Exposed’ as something “very different” for him. He hopes the pieces show who he is as a person and designer and said he plans to present it to local audiences “just the way I would love to give it to them”.“It’s a very different collection for me. I do fashion shows in the Caribbean and I decided I was not going to compromise for Bermuda anymore.“I am so used to compromising the collection for the mindset of people here so I decided I am just going to do what I love to do and just give it to the people. There are no restrictions at all.”Amethyst whose full name is Amethyst Richardson will be the main designer in The Harmony Fashion Collective 2012.The event, taking place next Sunday on the roof of the BIU Headquarters, will also feature up-and-coming local designers Ashley Aitken, Raffiné Whaley, Edith Rookes and Nicole Iris.Mr Richardson said he has been waiting to create this collection for Bermuda for the past five years. He ended up showing some pieces in St Thomas and said it was “pretty well received”.“They have a very conservative and religious lifestyle there but the people are very open to what we had to give them.”He envisioned his latest collection would allow women to go straight from lounging at a pool or on a boat to an early evening dinner, with little to no fuss.“They do not even have to go home, but they throw on what they have got, their heels and a little make-up and go straight to the dining room.”Mr Richardson started modelling when he was 15-years-old and dabbled in fashion design at age 17. He said he never used a design pattern and would make outfits freehand. “I basically taught myself, but my mom taught me a bit and my grandmother was a seamstress.“I guess it’s just genetics for me. I just always loved fashion.”Professionally designing for the past 12 years, Mr Richardson is known to go “far and beyond” with many of his creations, but said he was also focused on keeping things classic, beautiful and ultra feminine for his local fans.Mr Richardson said many of the Island’s women “had what it takes” to wear fashionable garb, but often aren’t sure how to execute it.“This is my way of showing them the can wear anything as long as it’s put together well and presented well.”By featuring a range of designers, Mr Richardson hopes there will be something for every body type and style. He said: “I know I am not going to please everyone but they have four other choices of designers they can enjoy.”One of those designers is 74-year-old Edith Rookes, who after 40 years as a seamstress decided to start designing her own collections.Ms Rookes said she always loved high fashion and designers like Madelaine Vionette and Coco Chanel. In practice, she specialises in plus size designs and describes her current collection ‘Divine Love’ as a mix of formal and casual wear. The fashion show falls on Mother’s Day at 5.30pm, with a cocktail reception sponsored by Goslings.Mr Richardson hopes women can make an evening out of it, perhaps starting with church or brunch and then coming out to the fashion show later that day.He also wants it to be a great night out for people of all ages.“I called this show ‘Harmony’ for the simple reason I think in these trying times people need to be brought together ... and have a place where they can take their minds off of the things going on worldwide, especially here in Bermuda.“A lot of people aren’t working and are unsure about their jobs so therefore putting together this collection with the other designers we want to take their minds off of that, so they can visually enjoy [the show] and be able to walk away feeling good about their day.”Tickets, $50, are not sold in stores and can only be obtained by contacting the designers. Mr Richardson can be reached on 705-1400. He said the show will start at 6.30pm sharp.
