Best of Bermuda head to Puerto Rico
The Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation (BBBF) will this week take a ten-member team of the Island’s top fitness athletes to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to compete in the International Bodybuilding Federation’s 2012 Central America and Caribbean Championships (CAC).The event will be held on September 21 and 22, and there is tremendous excitement and anticipation for success throughout the BBBF and among this year’s competitors.National Team Coach Muhsin Nasir hopes to represent Bermuda well and be one of the top three nations in the team point standings, and for all of the athletes to place in the top five and qualify for the finals in their respective class competitions. He said: “Some may rise to the occasion and get pro status.”The team includes seven women and three men. Perennial favourite Caroly Erasmus will be joined this year by Nicole Tovey in the Women’s Fitness Class, while Sabrina Burgess, Shameela Simons, and veteran Ranae Cann will represent Bermuda in the Women’s Figure Class. Hafid James will round out the non-bodybuilding group by competing in the Men’s Physique Class. The bodybuilders in the squad include Ms Bermuda 2012 Sueallen Lottimore and 2009 CAC Lightweight Class winner Sue Rebello, while Mr Bermuda 2012 JeVaughn Dill and former Mr Bermuda Jeftha Miller will compete on the men’s side.Five-time CAC competitor JeVaughn Dill says he is expecting hard competition at this year’s event. On the prospect of competing in his first CAC as the reigning Mr Bermuda, Mr Dill said: “Travelling to CAC this year as Bermuda's Mr Bermuda is a very proud feeling, but at the same time there is a little added pressure to make it to the top in the finals. This means I have to come in my top condition and stay focused.”Impressive newcomer Hafid James, winner of the Men’s Physique Class at the 25th Annual BBBF Night of Champions held in August, really isn’t sure what to expect of the CAC.“It’s a weird feeling not knowing what other people may look like or even what to expect, this being my first time. But I am going in confident. I am better than I was at the Night of Champions and I know The Federation wouldn't have selected me if they didn't think I have a chance to win it.”Mr James, however, does know that he will need to be at his very best to compete. “I expect some serious competition. I am going up against winners from their respective locations, but this makes me stay focused and train harder because, even though the competition will be much harder, I am still extremely competitive and I want to win this.”Former Ms Bermuda and four-time CAC competitor Sue Rebello is more philosophical when asked what she expects of this year’s competition. “You can't go into a bodybuilding competition expecting anything because you never know who is going to show up and what kind of shape they're going to be in. The two things one can expect is a battle on stage, and the unexpected. There are always little hiccups at shows, but you have to keep your cool or your body will react to the stress and you won't look your best.”The team will be accompanied by Coach Nasir, BBBF President Candy-Lee Foggo, and Team Delegate Wendy Dill.
