Caron Bermuda to honour eight heroes of the antidrug fight
The battle against drug and alcohol addiction can seem overwhelming, but Caron Bermuda wants you to know there are plenty of foot soldiers fighting on the front lines to end addiction in the community.Eight of these heroes will be recognised at the fourth Community Service Awards Breakfast at the Fairmont Hamilton.Doug Tieman, President and CEO of Caron United States Treatment Centers, will be the special guest for the event.Caron Bermuda regional vice president Gita Blakeney Saltus said that in the four years they have been running the awards breakfast there has never been any shortage of potential awardees.“We always have a big pool to choose from because there are so many deserving people in the community,” said Ms Saltus. “We are always ahead of ourselves in terms of honouring people, and looking at people who were nominated in the previous years.“We make the determination based on the number of nominations they have and whether they fit the criteria.“We have a community where people are in need but we have people who are also very responsive to these needs.”Awards are given in several categories.“I would say our unsung hero award is dear to me,” said Ms Saltus. “The person who wins this award is not normally noticed in the community with the regard to the fight against addiction.“Usually, they are a person who is quietly going about their affairs and making an impact one person at a time. It always highlights an extraordinary giving person who is very selfless.”Entry to the awards breakfast is $25 a person and is open to the general public.“This is not so much about Caron, it is about our partnerships and other people who are in the trenches with us,” said Ms Saltus. “This is not a fundraising opportunity, but an awareness-raising opportunity.”The awards take place November 27 at 8.30am.To reserve seating contact Berni Ingemann: 236-0823 or bingemann@caron.org.
