Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard’s annual Small Works Show starts Sunday

Great presents are known to come in small packages, that’s why the Bermuda Arts Centre in Dockyard will be hosting its annual Small Works Show just in time for the holiday season. The show gives a host of local artists the chance to create on any topic or medium they wish. The only catch is the piece can be no larger than 8 ½” x 11”.It is a revolving show, meaning once a piece of work is sold it is removed from the walls and the artist replaces it with another painting. The show opens on Sunday with a reception from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and runs through January 10.Gallery administrator Heidi Cowan said it was great way for people to come and find “original and affordable” holiday gifts for their loved ones, while supporting the local arts community. Gift wrapping will also be on offer.“It’s going to be a really fun night at the opening on Sunday,” Ms Cowen said. “We are serving a glass of ‘bubbly’ at the door to our guests [and] will be having raffles and decorated young cedar trees on sale.”Artists include: Joyce Beale, Ms Cowen, Lydia Franks, Kathryn Garcia, Molly Godet, Christopher Grimes, Jonah Jones, Kok Wan Lee, Christopher Marson and Chesley Trott. In keeping with the theme local artist Ronnie Chameau will be having a solo show entitled It’s A Small World, in the gallery’s Astwood Room.Ms Chameau has been working with all natural materials collected from around the Island and producing miniature versions of her work. The artist hopes those who see her collection would “become a child again” and said her favourite scenes involve banana bark.Ms Chameau, who has worked as a history researcher for the St David’s Island Historical Society, said her professional goal was to pass her craft on to others and keep the traditions going strong in Bermuda. Her show is also running until January 10.The Bermuda Arts Centre is open every day from 11am until 4pm.Useful website: www.artbermuda.bm
