If you’re the type of person who hates waking up early, or needs a pot of coffee before you can function, then this yoga class is probably not for you.But if you’re looking for a morning exercise routine that will help you get flexible and re-energised, Surya Namaskar or sun salutation classes might be the perfect solution.India-born Siva Senthamaraikannan will be offering yoga classes at various locations on Wednesday mornings at 7.30am.He said the classes would be a good workout preserving health and strengthening the body.Mr Senthamaraikannan started practising yoga while in high school. A yoga teacher would come each week to show students the sun salutation movements and he became “very interested”.“After a year I used to teach all these students in high school where I was studying. It was peaceful and when you do it you feel like you are refreshed,” he said.“I decided to offer the class because I heard a lot of my friends say they wanted to start yoga.”Mr Senthamaraikannan, who is married to a Bermudian, also works as a chef at Beau Rivage restaurant.Surya Namaskar is comprised of 12 different steps, each held for about five seconds and performed in the direction of the sun.For the most part beginners will start off with some of the simple yoga moves, but as their flexibility and strength progresses they will be given more steps.Mr Senthamaraikannan said to get the full benefit it’s best to do the movements in the morning, but people can still experience health benefits by practising the series of poses as often as they like morning, noon or night.“You should perform each step not more than five seconds and the round should be completed in one minute. It helps you relax and get a good night’s sleep,” he said.It also helps with concentration, improved heart and lung performance and muscle stamina. It has its origins in Hindu worship of the solar deity and has been practised in India for thousands of years. There are numerous references within the moves to praising the sun for the purpose of good health and prosperity.Mr Senthamaraikannan said: “Whether you regularly practise yoga or not, you can enjoy the health benefits of Surya Namaskar.“Performed correctly it’s a completely safe set of yoga poses that will not cause strain or injury.”The hour-long classes are offered at $20 each.
