‘It’s good for the soul to give back and help people’

It was two years ago when Ian Nash first embarked on a missions trip to Nicaragua to help needy children and families. The experience changed his life — so much so, that Mr Nash will be heading back to the region for a third time to volunteer.Departing on Friday, he will be helping with the second phase of a new school and building a medical facility and church in the impoverished nation. This time he will be joined by seven other residents of Bermuda, including girlfriend Sarah Donley, a registered nurse.Through a charity called Corner of Love, they will be devoting a week to helping people in the small villages surrounding San Ramon and Matagalpa.Mr Nash credits the charity with teaching him the importance of giving back both locally and globally. On his first trip, he was able to give vitamins, lice shampoo and other medications to more than 4,000 people. He was also able to start drilling for water in some of the communities that have never had a clean water source — thus preventing worms, parasites and other bacteria from getting into the drinking supply. He said the experience has given him a new lease on life and told The Royal Gazette: “I like doing it. You know a lot of people have the all-inclusive holidays, well this is kind of like my all-inclusive holiday.“It’s something that is rewarding, it’s good for the soul to give back and help people and enjoy what you are doing at the same time and I plan to continue doing it.”Over the past few months the Newfoundland, Canada native has been hosting fundraising events and reaching out for monetary support — so far he has raised $10,000.He is working hard to raise as much cash as possible before the end of the week and encouraged people to give any donation big or small.“Just to put things into perspective a $500 medical kit down there with Corner of Love goes a long way,” he explained.“The charity works with pharmaceutical companies and when some of their medications are due to expire within the year [these companies] decide they are not going to ship them out and would otherwise throw them away.“Corner of Love contacts these companies and put a kit together that would be worth close to $10,000 on the American market.”He said people don’t need to give any massive amount of money, but urged the public to “just give what you can”. He also wanted to give a special thanks to groups like AFSmith, BIOS, Mariners RFC, Medical House, Bermuda Ball Hockey Association and Flanagan’s Outback Sports Bar for their support and assistance. For more details or to donate visit www.cashfornash.com.Useful website: www.corneroflove.org
