What to expect in 2014

Even though we stock more than 1,000 wines I am asked on a quite regular basis if we have anything new, and the truth is that I am very excited about our recent discoveries, and also old friends, that all should arrive before the end of this month.

Some are here as I write, but some are not, so maybe I should control my enthusiasm, but why not let you in on a few secrets?

Good Rosé is one of our world’s fastest growing wine categories with a 13 percent increase over the past few years. France, where the population drinks more Rosé than White, leads the way with 26 percent of the overall total sales and 40 percent of this come from Provence.

When Sasha Lichine bought Chateau D’Esclans in Provence his goal was to make the best Rosé of them all, and as I read what critics said last year I would say that he has achieved his target.

In reviewing Chateau D’Esclans Whispering Angel, Matthew Jukes MW wrote: “Silky smooth, haunting wild berry fruit notes, I would wager you could drink it from midday to midnight without a care in the world.”

The Wine Enthusiast rated it 93/100 and said: “a powerful, wood aged Rosé that shows great richness, density and structure.”

Our only problem with this wine is that for the last three years the winery has run out as demand is so great, and even though I thought that we had ordered sufficiently we also have been out by summer’s end.

This year I believe that we have the solution, as I met with Sasha in October and very large stocks of his new vintage are just going into our warehouse today. We are also introducing for the first time, Whispering Angel, in half bottles and magnums. They should all be available in our shops next week.

Also being unloaded at this moment is a selection of excellent Bordeaux Chateau reds from the profound 2009 vintage, and for those of you that know, and appreciate these wines, names like Beauregard, Magdelaine, La Lagune, Pichon Baron, Grand Puy Ducasse, and Les Ormes de Pez should cause you to smile.

The very fine “second wines” La Croix de Beaucaillou 2008 and Alter Ego de Palmer 2006 are here as well.

A few months ago I was fortunate to sit next to a young man for dinner who introduced himself as Milan Brajkovich, the Vineyard Director for his family winery, and I would think that the next container to arrive will include Chardonnays from his Kumeu River winery in New Zealand. One critic writes: “flat out, Mike Brajkovich makes some of the best Chardonnay in the world, in blind tasting his wines are consistently thought to be Premier Cru White Burgundy, at least, if not Grand Cru. They have been awarded top scores from the Wine Spectator for years, making their Top 100 Wines in the World list five times.”

The long journey has begun from a winery that I feel is the best of them all in the far south Patagonia Region of Argentina. An Italian countess and a Bordeaux-trained Danish winemaker founded Bodega Noemia, and they farm biodynamically to produce tiny quantities of extremely fine Malbec from vines planted between 1930 and 1950. Decanter magazine considers Noemia one of the top ten producers in Argentina. We have three different wines on the way.

With names like Two Left Feet Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot, Maitre d’ Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carnival of Love Shiraz, you may hazard a guess that these wines are from Australia, and you will be correct. Mollydooker in McLaren Vale have been awarded Australian Winemakers of the Year, and Australian Boutique Winemakers of the Year, and McLaren Vale Bushing King and Queen a record breaking three times, a very special honour even if I do not understand what it means.

Believe me these are some of Australia’s most awesome wines.

So please stay tuned as our story is not over, but as you can see, we are doing our very best to make 2014 a wonderful and very interesting year for wine lovers.
