A 60-year love story
According to Marjorie Talbot, the day she first met Quinton Talbot it was love at first sight. She was on her way to school at Prospect School for Girls and he was going to work at the Naval Base. As he was getting off the bus he saw her, and the rest is history.
Mrs Talbot explained: “We were married on January 28, 1954, at 4pm at the Allen Temple AME Church in Somerset, where we still worship. I remember the day like it was yesterday. My mother-in-law, Valeria Talbot, made my wedding dress and the dresses of all my bridesmaids, and we were surrounded by a host of family and friends.
“Sixty years is a milestone for two people to reach, and yes, over the years, like any couple, we have experienced our share of ups and downs. Marriage is a very sacred thing and we have to be consistent.
“I was raised believing in God and that when you stand on his word and trust in Him, all things are possible.”
Over the past six decades, Marjorie and Quinton have led full and happy lives. They consider their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as their greatest joys. There are five children, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
“We encourage them to follow their dreams and to live life to the fullest. We also encourage them to maintain a foundation in Christ and in doing so they can accomplish anything that they set out to do,” said Mrs Talbot.
All of their lives, Marjorie and Quinton have resided in Somerset. They are considered fixtures in the parish and are recognised everywhere they go.
Following in the footsteps of his father Harold Talbot, a founder of the Somerset Cricket Club (SCC), Quinton is a member of the SCC as well as a member of the West End Sailboat Club. Marjorie has been a lifelong member of the Allen Temple AME Church and sings in its senior choir. She is also a member of the St James Church Stage group, who are known for putting on their annual Old Fashioned Concert each Easter Monday.
Reflecting on their 60th wedding anniversary this year, Marjorie simply gives thanks for all that she and her husband have and have been given.
She concluded: “We have our health, we have our family and we are still enjoying life, continuing to trust and love the Lord, every step of the way.”
