An award-winning National Geographic photographer will speak tonight at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) about work he is doing on Nonsuch Island.

David Liittschwager spoke earlier this year at BUEI about his work as a contributing National Geographic photographer and his latest book, about biodiversity, A World in One Cubic Foot.

He is now back on the Island and has been helping filmmaker and environmentalist J-P Rouja of LookBermuda to make a biological survey of the island. Mr Rouja recently launched www.nonsuchisland.com which allows people to watch cahow chicks in the burrows on Nonsuch through a special live camera feed.

“The biological survey started with portraits of different stages of development of the cahow chicks, from little tiny puff balls to very sleek seabirds that will not return to land for three to five years,” said Mr Rouja. “That is now expanding into the flora and fauna of Nonsuch and the surrounding waters. This complements all of the film, photography and virtual tours being created as part of the CahowCam project by the LookBermuda Team.”

Although Mr Liittschwager has gained notoriety for taking close up photographs of the biodiversity passing through cubic foot environments, for the Nonsuch project he is focusing on the whole island.

Photographs taken by Mr Liittschwager will be featured on the www.nonsuchisland.com website. Mr Rouja is hoping they will attract international attention. They will also be featured in a Nonsuch-themed photo exhibit as part of LookBermuda’s upcoming AirportArt project where they will install large scale murals on all open wall spaces throughout the airport.

Mr Liittschwager will speak tonight at 7.30pm at the BUEI. Tickets are $20 for members non-members $25.

Tickets available by calling 294-0204 or visiting BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop. Ticket holders are entitled to ten percent off dinner at the Harbourfront (food only) before or after the lecture. Call 295-4207 for reservations and be sure to mention the lecture.
