The Association of Fundraising Professionals Bermuda Chapter has partnered with The Centre on Philanthropy to present an event that aims to help people network and plan for a career in the non-profit sector.

Certified fundraising executive Sharilyn Hale will be the keynote speaker for The Sky’s the Limit: Careers of Purpose and Passion reception.

The reception is being held at The Centre on Philanthropy on 16 Wesley Street, Hamilton, tonight from 5.30pm until 7pm.

Ms Hale studied Philanthropy and Development at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, where she received her graduate degree. She also received a Masters degree in Philanthropy & Development, Ms Hale is also the founder and principal at Watermark Philanthropic Advising, and volunteered for the Grant Review Team in Toronto.

She has been a professional fundraiser for 20 years and is the author of six published books, including International Perspectives on Fundraising, Song of the River; Vocation in the Lives of Fundraiser, and A Conversation: Fundraisers and the Value of Vocation.

“It’s given me a tremendous opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute,” Ms Hale said.

She has worked with professional fundraising communities in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

“I have found that what unites professional fundraisers is a desire to make a difference by working with donors, volunteers and community partners to create the kind of world we all want to live in,” said Ms Hale.

For the young adults who are looking for a career in Philanthropy, she said: “Fundraising can become a career of purpose and passion.

“I encourage people who are interested in the non-profit sector to get involved as a volunteer, serve on a board or find a mentor to support their journey.”

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Bermuda Chapter encourages young people to consider the non-profit sector.

The Cummings V Zuill Scholarship is available to financially support adults who are overseas or participating in professional training while contributing to the non- profit community.

“The goal of AFP Bermuda is to provide high level educational opportunities, to encourage young people to consider the nonprofit sector when they are looking at what to study at university and ultimately the career they are considering, and professionalise the sector, offer a professional body for fundraisers on the island,” said Jennifer Adams, the President of AFP Bermuda Chapter and Director of Advancement for Bermuda High School for Girls.

The workshop Tackling Tough Ethical Issues in Fundraising will be held tomorrow in partnership with The Centre on Philanthropy.

College students and secondary school graduates are encouraged to attend this event because students and adults will get the opportunity to learn more about networking and career planning from Ms Hale.
