Breaking News: Gales and thunderstorms warning

Weather forecasters are warning of hurricane force gusts and severe thunderstorms this weekend — with the Causeway possibly having to close at about midnight tonight.

A storm warning was issued just after noon today by Bermuda Weather Service — valid from late this evening until tomorrow morning.

The bad weather is expected to hit at about 9 p.m., with sustained wind speeds likely to reach as high as 50 knots and hurricane force gusts of 64 knots or more.

Acting Public Safety Minister Walter Roban said the Emergency Measures Organisation was on alert and Government was monitoring weather conditions.

“As the weather deteriorates, there is a likelihood that the Causeway may have to be closed around midnight,” he said.

“The Bermuda Weather Service will provide updates as required but I encourage everyone to be prepared; use extreme caution if you must be on the roads. The safety of everyone is our number one priority.”

The weather forecast says residents should expect south to southwest storm force winds between 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. tomorrow morning, including at least one instance of hurricane force instantaneous gusts, especially in exposed or elevated locations.

The winds will drop to 25 to 35 knots but are predicted to increase again to gale force late morning tomorrow and continue throughout the weekend. There is a small craft warning today and a gale warning valid until Sunday.
