Injured man on cargo ship reaches Island

An injured man was rushed to the Island by helicopter after suffering serious hand and arm injuries on board a Turkish cargo ship.The MV Askabat, on route from Norfolk, Virginia to Waterford, Ireland, was 400 miles Northeast of Bermuda when she sent out a call for help.Bermuda Maritime Operations coordinated the airlift with US and Turkish authorities, while the Askabat diverted closer to the Island. A US Coast Guard helicopter and C130 aircraft were sent from Elizabeth City, North Carolina.At just after 8am yesterday, with the Askabat 78 miles Northeast of Bermuda, the injured 31-year-old man was winched aboard the helicopter and taken to LF Wade International Airport. An ambulance brought him to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.
