Works staff agree overtime cuts - if Govt trims spending

Public Works staff met this morning before BIU President Chris Furbert announced they had agreed overtime cuts, if Government trims its spending.

Public Works staff today agreed to overtime cuts — provided Government trims its spending from the top down.Bermuda Industrial Union president Chris Furbert told a press conference Government could save $1.5 million a year if Public Works employees are paid their regular wage instead of double time when they work overtime. But he said staff have concerns over money currently wasted on consultants, and only agreed to take the reduction if Government pledges to save money in other areas.Mr Furbert said more than 400 Public Works staff were told at a meeting today of the importance of productivity levels and not abusing sick leave during the recession. He added that similar talks between Government and BIU workers in other Ministries could take place in the coming weeks. The potential overtime cuts would take effect from April 1.
