No sighting of Bermudian sailors since January 3
Two Bermudian sailors who disappeared during a voyage are still not home, 48 days since setting sail from the Dominican Republic. There have been two sightings of Carlos Rogers, 41, and Kwesi Hollis, 36, since they began their journey on the 31-foot sloop Carefree IV on December 1.They were located 210 nautical miles south-southwest of Bermuda on the first occasion on December 18, and 150 miles nautical miles south east of the Island by the second on January 3.On both occasions they took on provisions from passing vessels and said they intended to continue to their destination, Bermuda. However, they are yet to arrive and have not been heard of since.Concerns for their safety amid winter storms led to a two-day air search by a US Coast Guard plane just before Christmas.Mr Rogers and Mr Hollis are believed to be inexperienced sailors, and the vessel has no life raft or emergency beacon. Vessels in the area have been asked to report any sightings.Asked for an update yesterday, a Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesman said: “There’s no new information at the minute. It’s still our top priority, we’re doing everything that we can, but there are no new sightings.”He declined to comment when asked what could have happened to the pair. Their families have shunned publicity since they disappeared.
