Rare cannon and carriage tribute to late sailor
Friends and family of the late Douglas Anfossi have joined together to place a tribute in his memory at the Bermuda National Museum.A replica carriage has been built for a rare cannon at the former Maritime Museum, in testimony to Mr Anfossi’s love of the sea.A Bermudian fisherman and boat enthusiast, Mr Anfossi drowned ten years ago on January 20.Michael Anfossi said: “My brother Douglas was very much a boat person. The sea was his life, which is why we donated in his name to the Maritime Museum.”Director of the National Museum Ed Harris said: “This gun carriage holds a very, very rare Charles I cannon of the late 1630s, which was found in 2009 at the Casemate barracks at Dockyard.”Dr Harris said a “gun crew” of volunteers from MaxCem, West End Yachts and the Dockyard, was needed to put the cannon and carriage in place.A memorial plaque will be added to the piece, which now stands in the Bermuda military exhibition at Commissioner’s House in Dockyard.
