Nightclub security concerns will be examined Minister

Community Minister Glenn Blakeney has stated Government’s new entertainment task force will respond to concerns over security restrictions on live entertainment.Asked about the amendments to the Liquor License Act of 1974, Mr Blakeney said: “This law may be something that Government is prepared to review. I am looking at it quite seriously and will ask the task force to look at it as well.”The new rules, drafted last year in response to rising gang violence, will commit nightclub owners to set numbers of security guards.Mr Blakeney acknowledged that in some cases these requirements could be “prohibitive” for bar owners.“Both sides have valid concerns. On one there is the impact of such a law on business establishments, but on the other hand are the concerns in the community that initiated the law these spiralling challenges that some clubs have had in controlling a safe environment for their clientele.“Unfortunately, it isn’t a one-situation-fits-all situation. The law should be applied equally across the board. There are establishments that run a completely safe environment, with clientele who have been completely orderly. It’s a case of the innocent suffering for the guilty, and it’s something the task force will examine.”Among other things, the legal amendments would force bars and restaurants to have one bouncer per 50 patrons if live entertainment runs after 10pm.Mr Blakeney did not elaborate if any of the stipulations in the new rules would be rolled back. The entertainment task force was set up earlier this month, and is expected to convene again next week. A mandate for the group is still under development.Mr Blakeney said: “I’d rather move slowly and methodically in addressing these challenges. The entertainment report (originally commissioned by Government) has a number of recommendations. We have to look at what’s viable in this economic climate.”Composed of artists and business owners, the group has grown beyond its expected 15, he said: “Everyone who has volunteered I’ve had no problem approving.”The task force is now looking at adding features to the May 24 celebrations.“One area I’m really excited about is Bermuda Day. There could be great opportunities to showcase Bermuda talent, outside of those involved in the parade. We’re looking at a few fundamental improvements that the public will enjoy.”An enhanced Bermuda Day is the earliest event under consideration, he said.
