Joint lands man a $2,000 fine
A Pembroke man picked up a $2,000 fine for a single joint of cannabis.Neville Richardson, 41, of Cherry Hill, admitted in Magistrates' Court of carrying 0.7 gram of cannabis in his pocket when police stopped him on October 1.The court heard from Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess that at 9pm uniformed officers were conducting a stop and search in anticipation of violence.Richardson was stopped at the junction of Court Street and Elliott Street, while riding a motorcycle. Informed he was being searched, Richardson made no reply. A small paper twist containing material that smelt like cannabis was found in a cigarette box in the left pocket of his shorts, at which point Richardson told them: “Yeah, it's a little weed.”He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station and released on police bail.The substance was found to be cannabis, and Richardson was subsequently charged on October 12 with possession of a controlled drug.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $2,000, to be paid by February 28.
