Bermudian woman remembered for her dedication to children

Kimberlyann (Kym) Dill with her Bermudian wife Crystal Bailey-Dill.

A Bermudian woman who died at 46 following a battle with cancer was yesterday remembered for the “unconditional love and dedication” she showed to children.Kimberlyann “Kym” Dill lived in Winnipeg, Canada with her Bermudian wife Crystal Bailey-Dill.The pair shared their home with a handful of children, many of whom they fostered.Mrs Bailey-Dill was yesterday too upset to speak about her wife’s December 29 death. However she shared a eulogy read at a memorial in Canada with this newspaper.“Kym’s greatest passion that you would rarely hear her talk about was her contribution and love for children... Her love for children went on right until she got sick.“While her babies were clearly [her son Jermaine, stepdaughters Chanda-LaBre and Kyla-Alexis and nephew Matthew] hers, Kym and Crystal still fostered other children, always having a full house.“During the time they fostered, there was a teenager and her two children, a baby boy, and two other sets of siblings. One baby girl in particular called Kym ‘mommy’.“Kym prided herself in being there the day she was born and had a special sparkle in her eye with her, which she reflected right back into the baby girl and all of the other children.”Ms Dill was born in Bermuda but moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario in her early teens to live with her father, Campbell Dill. The arts were one of her many passions. Ms Dill performed various backstage roles in plays and went on to study broadcasting. She discovered a love of music as a result of her work at radio stations here and in Canada.Ms Dill then changed career paths. She started a shuttle company that transported kids between home and school.“Than she got into the youth care business, doing respite work, working at the crisis stabilisation unit and in group homes. Kym’s work with kids in care of Child and Family Services was ongoing.“Kym made a difference in the lives of the kids with whom she worked. Her unconditional love and dedication allowed her to build wonderful, long-lasting relationships with these kids. Many kept in touch with her due to the fact that they knew they could count on her.“Kym was non-judgmental and would go that extra mile for a child in need.”That spirit led to Ms Dill’s work with a residential facility for youths, Project Neecheewam.“There were many times when one of the girls would be AWOL or missing. Kym would end her shift at the house and go out searching for the missing girl on her own time.“That’s just the wonderfully caring and giving person that Kym was. Kym remained in the lives of many of the kids from Neecheewam and would continue to assist them with their children, and court cases or just a ride home at [3am].”A private memorial service is now being planned for family and friends here.“Kym has touched many lives and whether you knew her in the capacity of an athlete, DJ or youth care worker, you knew that she was committed to everything she did and brought a sense of humour and a smile that was contagious.“And this is the way that Kym would love to be remembered. Her last spoken words to her wife were ‘be happy’ and that’s what she wanted for all who were around her.”
