?A family man who had a zest for life?
Family members were still in shock yesterday reeling from the news that Alvin Eric Flood died in a road traffic accident on Saturday.
His niece, Angel Smith, spoke to on behalf of the family. She said her uncle was given the nickname ?Chalky? as a child and that it stuck with him for the rest of his life.
Mr. Flood was born on Valentine?s Day in 1961 and his niece described him as a ?distinguished gentleman? and ?family man?.
?He was a family man who had a real zest for life that was manifested by his many passions such as fishing, baking and kite-making,? she said.
Ms Smith also described her uncle as the family handyman, saying that he was a talented left-handed mason.
Mr. Flood, who lived on St. Luke?s Lane in St. David?s, was an avid supporter of the the Island?s football and cricket teams.
His tragic death on Saturday morning, when his bike collided with a truck on North Shore Road, marked the Island?s second road fatality in 2006.
He was coming down Crawl Hill in Hamilton Parish when he was involved in a collision with a stationary line of traffic on his side of the road and an oncoming truck on the opposite side.
Eyewitnesses said two cars coming down Crawl Hill stopped to allow another car to pull off the road at Whitter?s Barber Shop.
The black-coloured scooter driven by Mr. Flood was following behind but did not appear to have enough time to brake and glanced off one of the stationary cars before swerving into the middle of the road where the rider struck a truck carrying concrete blocks.
A resident living nearby said it appeared the rider hadn?t noticed the cars stopping ahead of him.
Mr. Flood sustained serious head injuries from the collision and was pronounced dead at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital later that day.
He leaves behind him his wife Elizabeth Flood and son, Quincy Flood. Mr. Flood was the son of Alma ?Brownie? Lamb and the late Dennis Flood. Also grieving are his step-father Nelson Lamb and his siblings Audrey, Allen ?Oopie? and Anthony ?Lightening?.
Mr. Flood was 46 years old at the time of his death.
