Drug addict stole cooking oil

A drug addict pleaded guilty on Monday to stealing 12 bottles of cooking oil from a Pembroke wholesaler.

Troy Anthony Commissiong, of Brackish Pond Lane, Devonshire, was seen stealing bottles of Mazola Corn oil by a Butterfield & Vallis security guard, Crown counsel Wayne Caines told Magistrates' Court.

Commissiong said he stole the oil from an open container and not from inside the warehouse, as stated in the summary of evidence.

“It was totally out of character for me,” he told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner.

Mr. Warner asked: “What do you mean it is out of character for you?”

Commissiong said he meant he was stealing from a shop and it was not something he would usually do.

Be he explained: “I'm not saying it was right - stealing is stealing. But this was stealing from a business.

“The wheels came off the track, but I promise that you will never see me before this court again.”

In response Mr. Warner said: “You can't get yourself together - you are still interfering with drugs.”

Commissiong said: “I stumbled a little bit.”

Before fining him $200, Mr. Warner said: “I'm going to see if you can get it back on track or not.”

Teen admits break-ins

A teenager admitted to two break-ins when he appeared in Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Alvone Maybury, of Crane Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to breaking into a Devonshire home on January 20.

Crown counsel Wayne Caines said Maybury and another man were spotted outside the Dock Hill home by an off duty Police officer.

Later that day Maybury escaped from Police custody after he was positively identified by Police at the Devonshire Recreation Club. Maybury also admitted breaking into another home, where he stole a Dell laptop and other items.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report and Maybury was released on $2,000 bail with a like surety. He is due to return to court on March 14 for sentencing.

Policeman assaulted

Two teenagers who admitted assaulting a Policeman near a Southampton church were released on bail on Monday in Magistrates' Court.

Curtis Lorenzo Hill, 17, of Spice Hill Road, Warwick, pleaded guilty to using offensive words, violently resisting arrest, assaulting a Police officer and escaping Police custody.

And Dean Pitt, 18, of Hibiscus Lane, Warwick, admitted assaulting the same officer and obstructing him from executing his duties.

Junior Crown counsel Nicole Smith told the court that on January 8 both teens were walking along Tribe Road No. 1, which runs between the Southampton Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Bermuda Institute.

She said members of the congregation were walking from the church when they heard the pair shouting profanities. They asked the off-duty Police officer, who was later assaulted, to investigate.

Ms Smith said the officer then jumped over the wall onto the road, identified himself, and informed the pair they would be arrested for using offensive words. A fight ensued, which resulted in the Police officer being bitten, punched in the mouth, kicked from behind and bruised. He was treated at King Edward Memorial VII Hospital. His attackers fled.

Ms Smith said during a January 21 taped interview that Pitt admitted the offences, but said he would not have assaulted the man had he known he was a Police officer.

Lawyer Larry Scott argued both were young and would not have knowingly assaulted a Policeman.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said new laws gave magistrates more powers in sentencing when an officer had been assaulted. Such offences now carried a sentence of up to four years.

Mr. Warner ordered a social inquiry report for both first-time offenders. They were released on $2,000 bail and will return to court on March 14 for sentencing.
