Breaking News: Armed Police to be on duty on Bermuda Day

Armed officers will be on duty during the Bermuda Day celebrations as Police step up their presence.

Superintendent Martin Weekes spoke at a press conference this morning and confirmed there will be armed officers at the celebrations and at locations in various parts of the Island.

He said: From a Police point of view, we will be looking at safety for the community as a whole for the weekend. Obviously we are concerned about recent acts of disorder and we will be stepping up our presence both over the weekend and Monday to prevent any incidents of disorder.

Supt. Weekes also said the Police will be working in a partnership with GET security company, which will be helping with security on the day.

The increased Police presence follows higher security at the Annual Exhibition last month when people underwent searches with metal detectors before being allowed in.
